I attended the 2nd annual Hula-hoop-a-thon in Baltimore this weekend; it’s a fund-raiser for Fluid Movement. ‘Twas great fun.
As the contestants congregated, Miss Trixie Little, host of the event and one of the judge’s explained, “You’re responsible for making sure your hoop stays safe and that you don’t collide with anyone else. Sorry. But rules are rules.”
I like her philosophy and thought it was a good rule for the contest. See, a hoop will fall to the ground in a sec if it hits anything or anyone; the orbit, the flow stops instantly. What I took from this is that I am responsible for watching out for myself and to be safe, i.e. to make sure I don’t hit anything with my hoop. I’m also responsible for watching the other hoopers and passerbys to make sure my hoop zone is safe.
I think this is quite applicable to life.
Hah, maybe that’s one reason I love hooping so much: Because I can have all the fun in the world with my hoop as long as I’m safe and I’m looking out to see who might be impacted by my actions as well.
Congratulations, as well, to Miss Joule, the 2007 Master of the Hoops, and Strange Powers, the 2006 reigning champion who passed her title on. ~Jessie
